Woven spider wheel embroidery tutorial – with video lesson

woven spider wheel video tutorial

The woven spider wheel has become a new favorite in floral embroidery. Many embroiderers use them for stitching pretty roses – which is why this stitch is also called the woven rose stitch.

This tutorial is part of the new lexicon of embroidery stitches. If you want to learn more about stitching flowers, I highly recommend visiting the flower embroidery series, too.

Tips for neat woven spider wheels

For this stitch, you will indeed weave along a set of foundation stitches. To make this process easier, use a needle with a rounded tip to prevent catching the threads accidentally.

If you don’t have such a needle, turn the needle around and weave with the other side (where the eye of the needle is). In doing so, make sure to be careful with your fingers. Pushing the needle through with the sharp side facing your fingers can be hurtful. Speaking from experience here. this can be avoided by working with a thimble though.

For this stitch, I like to use thicker threads for the weaving part. This makes the process much quicker and the rose gets a bit puffier than with thin threads.

For bigger wheel spans you’ll find that the thread wants to take short cuts in the outer regions of the circle. Be careful to lay the threads around the existing woven parts so that the thread stays in the curve. If this is not working anymore, you might consider adding more foundation stitches for the outer region or use the stem stitch to work the last rounds of the rose.
